The Difference Between Density & Texture

Density is the amount of individual hairs per square inch on your head. Density is the amount of hair you have on your scalp as a whole. It does not have to do with how thin or thick an individual strand of hair is. That is Texture. Texture is the circumference of an individual strand of hair, ranging from fine, medium, and thick.

You may have low density (not a lot of hairs on your head), but each individual hair strand is thick! Or you may have a higher density of hair, but the individual strands of hair are thin.

What determines hair texture?

Short answer, GENETICS!

People with uteruses may notice their hair density and texture change during pregnancy. Big hormonal shifts like puberty, pregnancy and menopause can change all kinds of things about our bodies. Many notice a change in their hair, their skin, and even the hair pattern going straight or curly. If you are experiencing these changes, I would recommend partnering up with a stylist! We can help with your at home routine, and provide a cut and/or color to compliment your hair in its current state.

What are some things that impact hair density?

Pregnancy and postpartum, hormones, major surgery, illness like covid, diet, and vitamin deficiencies can impact the density of our hair. But as with everything hair related, the biggest impact on our hair density is our genetics. Some people just have thin density while others have thicker.

I have low density, is there a way to reverse it?

Don’t let the influencers trick you, there is no secret oil or pill that will make more hairs grow on your head.

Vitamins, supplements, and diet can help, but as a hairstylist and NOT a certified doctor, I don’t feel comfortable generalizing a recommendation.

If you are struggling with severe hair loss, PLEASE talk to your doctor! They will be able to help you get to the root of what is going on and offer solutions from there.

Knowing your unique hair density and texture can help you figure out what cuts and/or colors are going to best compliment you!

Joy
