4 Life Lessons I Learned From Doing Hair
1. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s the BEST way to learn.
When I first started to cut hair, I was PARANOID that i would make a mistake. I remember being so scared to cut my mannequin’s hair. My boss told me, “just cut! I need you to make mistakes so I can teach you!” That always stuck with me. Jamie Varon says, “ Failing is, truly, information.” So next time you are about to make your first” cut”, know it’ll probably be imperfect. BUT it’s the first step forward.
2. Just show up!
I was reflecting on how I have found success in my job, and I realized it’s because I dedicate time to it, every single day. Find time, every week and PRACTISE. Each baby step, is a step forward.
3, Give yourself grace.
And don’t play the comparison game. I would sometimes catch myself comparing myself to stylist’s who have been doing hair for 15+ years and think, dang I SUCK. But I have realized that I am on a unique journey. So instead of being jealous of the successful people around me, I choose to be inspired by them. And to learn from their stories.
4. Surround yourself with good people
People who encourage you, teach you, hype you up, and support you. And most important, uplift those around you!
