5 Things Hairstylists Do That You Should Be Doing Too

Here are 5 simple things that I do, that will save your money on products and will improve the results of your hair care!

1. I always put liquid products in my hands, not directly on the hair.

(By liquid products I mean products like shampoo, conditioner, gel, cream, oil, etc.) After you put the desired amount of product in your hands, spend a few seconds emulsifying your hands together, and then apply the product to your hair. Doing this will give you more control and the action of emulsifying the product in your hands activates it. Similar to how hand soap lathers and spreads when you add water and rub your hands together.

2. I use water as a tool to help my products to spread more evenly.

Keep in mind that salon products are highly concentrated so diluting them with water will help your products work more effectively. And will help you use less products, which will save you money!

3. I always tell my guests that less is more!

It is easy to add more if you need it, but its a lot harder to get rid of product once its on your hair.

4. I clean my tools regularly!

I clean the filter on my blowdryer once a week to keep the machine working at its best. I clean out my brushes between every single guest, and I recommend you clean yours out after every use! I only clean my hot tools when they need it. Unplug your hot tool and wait for it to cool down. Then take a warm, wash cloth and gently wipe off any product buildup that may have accumulated on the hot plates of your tool. NEVER PUT YOUR HOT TOOLS UNDER RUNNING WATER!!

5. Sometimes, for whatever reason, taking on a certain hair task like shampooing our hair or curling it can feel daunting.

I always encourage my guests to section, section, section!

I section when I apply color, when I shampoo, condition, cut, and when I apply products. My sections keep me organized, which keeps the overwhelm at bay, and it forces me to slow down and do a thorough job.

All of these things may seem really simple, but I have learned that making small, effective adjustments can make a huge difference in how I care for me and my guest’s hair!

Joy
