Do I Really Need A Satin Pillowcase?

Clients ask me all the time if a satin or silk pillowcase is actually worth it… And the simple answer is, YES!

Here’s why…

First of all, let’s do a quick science lesson. I promise, it will be interesting!

We have the hair shaft, which is the individual strand of hair. The outer layer of the hair shaft is made up of cuticles. The cuticles overlap to strengthen and protect the hair shaft. When cuticles lift up, that is what we call frizz! (To complete the quick science lesson, the rest of the hair shaft is comprised of the cortex, and sometimes, at the very center, the medulla.)

Our hair is essentially a fabric. When we lay our fabric of hair against a textured surface (like a traditional towel or pillowcase), then our cuticles can get caught on the fibers of those fabrics and lift up, aka creating frizz. Satin and Silk fabrics have a smooth surface, so there is nothing that our cuticles can snag on and get mad about!

I recommend all my guests use satin/silk products and accessories. Also, another benefit of a satin/silk pillowcase is that its better for our skin! They say it helps to prevent lines and wrinkles. I included a few links to some pillowcase, scrunchies, and other hair accessories.

  • I really like the brand KITSCH. They have everything from pillowcases, microfiber towels, to heartless curl sets and more!

  • Amazon is usually an accessible option for a lot of us. Here are some satin affordable scrunchies here and here. (These are both affiliate links, and highly rated on Amazon!)

  • This is the exact pillowcase that I have at home. I bought them 2 years ago and they are still holding up great! (The link is an affiliate link!)

  • The Beauty Factory always has beautiful accessories in the boutique. If you’re in the Springfield MO area, please come in and say hi and pick up some cute goodies for your hair!

Happy pillowcase shopping everyone!
