What The Frizz??
First, let’s start with a quick explanation of the structure of our hair.
What causes frizz?
Weather plays a huge factor in our hair’s behavior. Hello, humidity! Also certain fabrics can cause our hair to frizz. Highly textured fabrics can catch on our cuticles, causing them to raise up. Some other reasons include, level of curl and excessive use of hot tools like flat irons or curling irons.
Frizz is also a result of dry hair that is lacking moisture (more on this in a second!)
Does frizz mean my hair is unhealthy?
Repeat after me, FRIZZ IS NOT BAD. And if you’re hair is frizzy, that does not mean it is unhealthy. Sometimes the presence of frizz can indicate some things we need to change in our hair care routines, but frizz is a natural and normal thing that happens to every single head of hair. Frizz gives us volume! But frizz can also make our curl pattern not as defined as we would like.
So how do I get my curls to look more defined?
This is how I break it down for my guests. Imagine a field of sunflowers. They all face the same direction, which is towards the sun. So now imagine your hair are the sunflowers and water is the sun. Wherever the water is, the hair moves toward it. That is why rain, humidity, mist, etc can make us feel like our hair is “frizzy”. Defined curls have had a good drink of WATER. I coach my guests to think of water as a product! Make sure you are utilizing water throughout your wash, condition, and styling routine. Instead of layering on tons of creams or oils, try adding more water FIRST.
