Let’s Talk About Grey Hair

There’s this weird time in a woman’s life when she has to decide what the heck to do about the grey/silver hairs that are starting to appear. It’s a hard choice because there’s no right answer.

Here’s what some of my clients say:

“Meh, I don't care.. give me a killer cut and lets just rock these greys.”

Or, “COVER THEM UP AND I BETTER NOT SEE A HINT OF THEIR EXISTENCE!!!”

And then others like to do a blend of the two.

Here are a couple ways I approach grey hair:

  1. Complete Coverage. This is where I apply a permanent color to your roots to ensure all grey hairs are completely covered up. I often find adding in lighter pieces, like highlights, around the face help to keep the grow out from looking too severe. The pro of this approach is in the title! No grey hairs around here, thank you very much. The con could be a more high maintenance salon schedule (although coming in and hanging out with yours truly should be in the pro column so… 🤷‍♀️😆).

  2. Blended Coverage. This is where I skip the permanent color and utilize strategically placed highlights and/or demi color to camouflage those grey hairs. The pro of this approach is a low maintenance salon schedule. I’ll be seeing you more like every 10-15 weeks than every 6-8. A possible con is that when you look in the mirror, you are going to see those grey hairs.

Now, you’re probably thinking “Okay Joy, how do I decide what to do?” Well this is when the consultation comes into play. Here are some of the questions I like to ask my clients:

  1. How often do you want to come to the salon? If you want those greys completely covered, your appointment schedule is going to look different than someone who wants them blended (and just another reminder, BOTH OPTIONS ARE OKAY.)

  2. What’s your budget and lifestyle? I am not going to recommend going in a specific color direction if its going to mess up your budget or schedule!

  3. Do you have a timeline on when you do (if ever) want to go 100% natural? Some guests have a specific age in mind that they want to start growing out their natural color. Knowing this information helps me plan out what I should do! And if you are like, “uhhhh I don’t know what I want to do in 2 hours, never mind in 2 years...” then that’s ok, too. 😊

I really despise society’s message that grey hair “ages” somebody, but I also understand that hair is a very personal and vulnerable thing for every single person. My goal is to support you and help you out as best I can! Ready to make a plan? Click here to get started and I can’t wait to see you in my chair!

Xx,

Joy
