How To Take Care Of Your Hair This Summer!

Ahh summer time. The time for hanging by the pool, playing outside in the sunshine, and seeing friends! Summer also means harmful UV rays and chlorinated pools. So here are some easy ways to protect your hair as you have fun this season!

1 How to protect your hair in the pool.

I grew up in a tropical country, which meant that I went swimming every. Single. Day.

Here is what I wish younger Joy knew so she could have protected her hair from the harsh chemicals in the pool.

  • Rinse your hair in the shower before jumping in the pool. You can also add some conditioner to your hair and leave it in while you swim.

  • Our hair is a fabric, so it will absorb whatever liquid is put on it. Getting your hair wet with regular water will minimize the absorption of chlorinated or salty water.

  • Rinse hair IMMEDIATELY after swimming!

You can wait to shampoo and condition later, but just rinsing your hair for 1-2 minutes after you get out of the pool will help to rinse away all the chemicals!

2 How to protect our hair and scalp from the sun’s UV Rays.

  • Wear a hat or scarf if you are going to be in direct sun for an extended period of time.

(Don’t forget to wear spf on your face and neck every single day, even if you aren’t spending the day traipsing in the sun!)

  • Avoid excessive heat styling like curling irons and opt for wearing your hair in its natural state!

*Blowdrying or diffusing your hair does NOT count as direct heat in this case. So continue with your regular blowdrying/diffusing routine!

3 HUMIDITY.

High humidity = frizz (check out this blogpost to learn more about where and what frizz is!)

Every single person gets frizz, its a completely normal thing, and I feel like we are all collectively working on normalizing people just wearing their hair as it is.

  • EMBRACE YOUR FRIZZ. There are certainly techniques and ways to define your curl pattern, but frizz means lots of beautiful volume and shape. So friends, this summer we are loving our hair wholly and without shame!!! ☺️

Want help with those techniques I mentioned? Come in for a consultation, or if you’ve already done that, come see me for an educational curly cut!

Stay hydrated, wear your sun protection, and have THE BEST SUMMER!

Xx,

Joy
